The Best Christian Non-Fiction Books I've Read in the Last Year or Two

MY FAVORITE CHRISTIAN NON-FICTION BOOKS
(that I read in the last 2-ish years)

The Prodigal God: Recovering the Heart of the Christian Faith

The Prodigal God
Timothy Keller uses one of the best-known Christian parables to reveal an unexpected message of hope and salvation. Taking his trademark intellectual approach to understanding Christianity, Keller uncovers the essential message of Jesus, locked inside his most familiar parable. Within that parable Jesus reveals God's prodigal grace toward both the irreligious and the moralistic. This book will challenge both the devout and skeptics to see Christianity in a whole new way.

Gospel Fluency: Speaking the Truths of Jesus into the Everyday Stuff of Life

Gospel Fluency
Even if they want to, many Christians find it hard to talk to others about Jesus. Is it possible this difficulty is because we're trying to speak a language we haven't actually spent time practicing? To become fluent in a new language, you must immerse yourself in it until you actually start to think about life through it. Becoming fluent in the gospel happens the same way―after believing it, we have to intentionally rehearse it (to ourselves…

I’d love to get Bible Recap! There are not enough Christian Book Tubers out there! Thanks for incorporating your faith into your channel. I love watching your videos and building my TBR from them. As a mom of kids aged 11, 9, and 6, I also appreciate the bits you add in acknowledging the mothering side of your life as well. Reading has been a solace to me in the last year and I feel like we’re friends even though we’ve never met!

The last Christian non fiction book I read and HIGHLY recommend is the birth order book by Kevin Leman!

I would probably want Prodigal God or the Bible Recap

I’d love to see a video or blog post on different ways (and reasons) to annotate fiction books. (I understand annotating non fiction, but can’t wrap my head around annotating fiction) 🤷🏼‍♀️

      • Leisa

The best nonfiction book I’ve read recently is The American Story by David and Tim Barton. It explains how America was founded on Christian principles.

And I am adding these all to my TBR list, I think my first pick is Satisfied.

I’m always looking for clean, engaging books for my book addict kiddos. That especially love mysteries/spy type books.

    Hi Chantel,

Age of Opportunity: A Biblical Guide to Parenting Teens (Resources for Changing Lives)
    by Paul David Tripp
    I have his
Parenting: 14 Gospel Principles Than Can Radically Change Your Family by Paul David Tripp that I’m anticipating will be just as good. (but I haven’t read it yet. I thought I had).
    Understanding Jeses by Joe Amaral
    Job by Charles R. Swindoll.

Okay, I’m done. Honestly, nothing beats reading the Bible. Nothing can replace it.

I would very much like to win Gospel Fluency.

Hearing the truth about books that claim to be for Christians but aren’t scripturally sound is something that is missing and Christian women, mom’s seem to be the biggest culprits. We need to support each other and stay grounded in order to raise our children uprightly.

    Thank you Chantel.
    Erion~

I would love to win Awakening as an Education Support Teacher and mom who is looking into alternative education,it sounds amazing and so insightful. There are a couple of interesting non-fiction books that I’ve read and really enjoyed and they are: Pain And Predjudice by Gabrielle Jackson, the blurb says that it should be read by every woman, man and Dr and I totally agree. The other book is, Unwell Women by Elinor Cleghorn it’s along the same lines as the Pain And Predjudice , in that it looks at how women’s pain and illness is often misdiagnosed, misunderstood and is surrounded in mystification. The last book is Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee by Dee Brown. Thank you for all your reccomedations Chantel, your videos really make my day! 🤗

    • Nerena

      1. My favorite non-fiction I’ve recently read is: ‘When people are big and God is small’ by Edward T. Welch. It talks about the fear of man and how we all have it and can overcome it. Not the easiest book to get through but I highly recommend! It is also filled with scripture which I always love.
A fiction book i really wanna share as a bonus is: ‘The visit’ by Adrian Plass. I never hear people talk about it but it is hands down my favorite book of all time (apart from the bible itself 🙂 It’s a short easy read of about 50 pages only but it paints such an wonderfully beautiful picture of Jesus. If you read any book in your life let it be this one.

      2. I would like to win Gospel fluency as it is something I also want to practice myself in.

      3. Maybe it would be an idea to make a post about books that are very easy to read as I know a lot of people get stuck halfway through a book. Especially in non-fiction christian books there’s a lot of them which are not easy to get through.

I wish a good day to anyone reading this :))

  • Jaime

My current favorite Christian Non-Fiction is “Sitting at the Feet of Rabbi Jesus”. I read it in July and I am still trying to absorb all that was in that book. It truly changed the way I approach the bible and my study time. As for just a Non-Fiction in general my current favorite is “Devotion” by Adam Makos. I read it in January and I am still telling people about this book. It is a military historical non-fiction dealing with Korea and a special group of Naval pilots (one being the first African American to serve as a pilot in the Navy). I don’t normally cry when reading this type of book but I sobbed the last 8-10 chapters. So amazing!
I have added Gospel Fluency to my wish list and look forward to getting my hands on that at some point in the future!

    Hi Chantel
    1. Traced – Nathaniel T. Jeanson [Such an interesting read.]
How Do You Kill 11 Million People? – Andy Andrews [Less than an hour audio but a really good reminder.]
Made For More – Hannah Anderson [One of my favorite quotes (pg 115) “Success isn’t doing whatever you want to do; it is doing whatever God has made you to do.” I find myself thinking about this and what it means for me as a homeschool mama.]

    2. Satisfied

    3. Anything bookish and I’ll love it!

    Thank you, for sharing 🙂

  • Joy ward

Hey Chantel, enjoying your posts. My favorite non-fiction Christian book is The Case for Grace by Lee Strobel. I’d like the Bible Recap and what I’d like to see is books that maybe 5th grade boys might like. Especially those boys who don’t really care to read.
    Thank you,
    Keep reading!
    God Bless,
    Joy

  • Amber Woods

    1. I just read:
So, you want to be like Christ?
    By Charles Swindoll
Wow. A life changing book. It takes a deep look into the disciplines we need to practice to live more like Christ. Amazing.
    2. I would LOVE to read Awakening Wonder! I am a teacher and the “million dollar question” is always, how do we inspire lifelong lovers of learning? That being said, this book sounds so intriguing to me!
    3. I love your Agatha Christie videos! Love mysteries and want to read more after watching your videos!
    Keep doing what you do!!

  • Angela Henry

Hey Chantel! I dont know if I can even name a favourite non-fiction right now. I am in the middle of so many but just cant seem to complete anything. The Gospel according to Jesus-John MacArthur is excellent, and I’m also reading God vs Government by James Coates, and the Discipline of Spiritual dicernment- Tim Challies, last two are Canadian.
That Gospel fluency sounds really good, that is an area i definitely struggle in. I am also reading through the Bible chronologically and using the Bible recap, but honestly I am doing terrible. I wonder if having the Bible Recap physical book would be better for me.🤔

Anyways good video, I will be on the lookout for some of these books. Have a good week!

    • Ashley

      1. Francis Schaefer’s “A Christian Manifesto” and “Art and the Bible” were awesome and make me want to read every book by him (next up for me is “How Should We Then Live?”), and “A Change of Affection” by Beckett Cook was very good also – of which the audiobook is a pleasant listen.
      2. I would like to win Awaking Wonder, though Angela Braniff’s book sounds interesting too!
      3. I would be interested to hear about books that aren’t considered exactly billed as “Christian books”, but that have deep meaning for you as a Christian

  • Edilma

Hi. I am currently reading ” The Best Yes” by Lysa Terkeurst. I do love it. I am more conscious of my time and decisions in relation to God’s will and for His glory. I am a homeschooling mom and so I would love to win “Awaking Wonder.” As far as future content I am very interested in children’s literature. Thanks for the opportunity to participate. 🤗💕

  • Hannah Costa

    Yay for giveaways! lol
Hmmm I cant remember when was the last time I finished a non-fiction….Id say the YWAM C.S. Lewis book was the last one we read aloud 🙂 It actually suprised me a bit actually. Learning about his relationship with his wife was….interesting to say the least 🙂

Id love to get the Bible Recap! I listen to her podcast, but find myself getting bogged down if I miss a day and need to find the correct one. I think the physical book would help me 🙂

  • Bettie

The book that has meant the most to me in the last couple years is “Dark Clouds Deep Mercy” by Mark Vroegop. I’ve actually read the book 3 times including once with a counselee and once with the ladies Sunday school class I lead. Then at Christmas I was put on a vent for Covid. Someone from my class suggested my husband read it. He also was blessed by the book.

Of the books you have listed I would like The Prodigal God by Timothy Keller. It can go on my shelf with the other Keller books I’ve collected and not yet read. 🙄

  • Cathy

Last year I read ‘Alive in Him’ by Gloria Furman. It was a beautiful and in depth study of the book of Ephesians. Highly recommend!

I’ve been wanting to reading the Bible chronologically, so I’d pick ‘The Bible Recap’ for the giveaway. Sounds so interesting.

I love non-fiction, so more of these kinds of posts on your site would be great. 😊

    • Lynlyn

Hi, sis. Chantel! ❤️ Blessed day!

Wowww. This giveaway is great and exciting!! I really love to join this giveaway and indeed a blessing for me. 😍❤️

      1. Anxious for Nothing by John MacArthur
      2. Bible Recap, I really love to have this book as I’ve seen, it is very helpful in my Bible studies. This is also not available in Christian bookstores in my country.
      3. I love more of non-fiction book recommendations, so I’m looking forward to see it in your site.

  • Marcie

I try to read a couple of non-fiction every month and these are favourites from 2022. Hollywood Heroes by Frank & Zach Turek was a recent worthwhile read. It is subtitled “How your favourite movies reveal God” and discusses Marvel superheroes, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, etc. I’m leading an apologetics group right now so this was a good resource to share with those ladies. Mama Bear Apologetics would be worthwhile to read as well. Captive in Iran: A Remarkable True Story of Hope and Triumph amid the Horror of Tehran’s Brutal Evin Prison was captivating as it discusses these two young women who were imprisoned in Iran for sharing the gospel. Cold Case Christianity was a great fast read (there are kids versions that I think you’d enjoy using with your kids). Unfollow: A Memoir of Loving and Leaving the Westboro Baptist Church might appeal to your enjoyment of learning about cults. I’ve Seen the End of You by W. Lee Warren was fascinating – a brain surgeon who often deals with terminal patients and how his faith and the faith of his patients comes into play.

I’d love Bible Recap most, but there are others I’ve added to my TBR.

I love bookish content and I’ll read it all. I suppose booklists are a favourite such as books about little known events in history. I also appreciate “If you like this book, try these” lists.

  • Patricia DiMarco

    1. One of my favorite reads: the better mom, growing in grace between perfection and the mess
    By: Ruth Schwenk
    2. I am interested in reading the Prodigal God!
    3. Christian fiction authors

  • Carmen Miller

Favorite Christian non-fiction : Another Gospel by Alisa Childers
I would love the Bible Recap book. I just started listening to the podcast while following the reading plan and i’ve been loving it! After losing my first baby to miscarriage in February, and just walking through a season of grief, doubt, and questions, this really helped me to get back in to the Word, and pulled me out of a dark place. I love how she encourages us to find God’s character in everything we read. I think the book would be another great asset!
Love your videos, and looking forward to more posts here on the website! 🙂

  • Bridget

I just finished The Lord is My Courage by K.J. Ramsey, a newly released Christian nonfiction book. It was so good; I highly recommend!
I’d like to win the Bible Recap. I’m always interested in Bible study guides like this, and I’ve never done a chronological read through of the Bible.

  • Monika

I recently read Pray Confidently and Consistently by Val Woerner and highly recommend it. It was easy to read (I enjoy her writing style), yet challenging, and i think no matter where you’re at, it helps to highlight and remind us about the power of prayer as well as practical ways to improve your prayer life.

I would love to win the Bible recap book, but lots sound great! I am listening through the podcast this year for the second time and would love to have the print version to accompany Bible study.

  • Mindy

I am currently reading and enjoying Mama Bear Apologetics. I am interested in The Bible Recap or Love Centered Parenting. And I love all your book videos! My husband gets nervous when he sees you on my laptop… and then I’m shopping on Book Outlet or Amazon! 🙂

  • Hillary

    I love posts/videos like this!! 😍
I recently finished “For the Children’s Sake” by audiobook and really appreciated learning more about Charlotte Mason. I also finished Jen Wilkin’s “None Like Him” a couple of months ago and absolutely loved it! Her teaching is so fabulous!
I have been wanting to read “Love Without Borders” for a while now…I’d be thrilled to win a copy!

  • Jane B.

    1) Ok. So honestly, I haven’t been reading much non-fiction lately. So I’m not sure this would qualify as “favorite” but rather one of the very few I’ve actually read in the last year. That would be “Get Out of Your Head” by Jennie Allen

    2) I would LOVE to read so many of these!! But I’m torn between Gospel Fluency & Satisfied…. As I’m quite indecisive at the moment… if I do win – I’ll let you pick one of those for me. 😉

    3) Do you use cookbooks? I know you cook a lot of gluten free meals because of your husband… would love to hear recommendations for cookbooks and maybe some meal ideas in a video! 😀

  • Amy

    1) Hard to pick because I love everything I’ve read by John or Stasi Eldredge, but Forgiving What You Can’t Forget was probably the most life changing.

    2) I’ve had Prodigal God on my wishlist for awhile!!

    3) I don’t think you’ve posted anything bookish I haven’t loved yet, Thank You for being here!

  • Dorothy

There are so many good reads on this list that I’m interested in reading!

I recently finished Grace Based Parenting- Tim Kimmel and Parenting with Love and Logic- Foster Cline, they were both really good.

I would love to read Gospel Fluency!

And I think you’re really good at choosing a wide variety of content, I’ve enjoyed your blog for a number of years now!!

  • Chelsey

    1. My favorite non-fiction book is My All For Him by Basilea Schlink. It is so good! It’s all about loving Jesus and Him being our First Love.

    2. I would like to win Gay Girl, Good God by Jackie Hill Perry because the LORD also delivered me from same sex attraction and i would love to read this book as well, i heard from Kylee Michelle that this is a good book also.

    3. I would love to see you shopping books or visiting a library that would be amazing!

God bless you sis! I’m 17 years old sending much love from the Philippines

  • Kaylee

My favorite non fiction I’ve read recently is How to Pray by Pete Greig.

I would love to read Gospel Fluency.

I like reading posts about Christian books because I’m always looking for new recommendations.
